The characteristics of gymnastics apparel are defined by the sport itself. Gymnastics requires free and rapid movement with little resistance. Clothing must not hinder the gymnasts’ actions in any way—accordingly, gymnastics apparel fits tight to the body in order to prevent tripping over loose clothing. However, gymnastics apparel cannot be so tight as to restrict movement, for fluidity and ease of movement are key components of the sport. However, when working out, gymnasts are free to utilize a looser wardrobe, as long as the clothing is appropriate for exercise. Breathable cotton is recommended for indoor use, while spandex and lycra are good materials for outdoor use.

When giving a dance performance, or participating in a gymnastics competition, dancers and gymnasts must not only be able to move freely, but should look their best as well. Dance costumes cover a range of dance genres, from hip hop to ballet. Accordingly, the dance costume corresponds with the traditional connotation of the dance genre. For example, a tap dancer may wear a top hat and sport a smart-looking suit-based costume, while a modern dance group may wear more contemporary, artistic dance clothing. Gymnastics apparel, on the other hand, does not allow for too much discretion, as the requirements for a gymnast tend to be stricter. Gymnastics wear (for men and women) comprises a tight-fitting leotard. Tape can be worn on the hands and feet to improve traction on the gymnastic apparatuses.

Generally, younger gymnasts do not have to worry about adhering to a strict dress code. Their gymnastics apparel usually consists of looser clothing when they are younger; as the children become older, they may invest in leotards so that they may not be hindered as they work on gymnastic techniques. When beginning training in gymnastics, youth instructors are more concerned with imparting proper gymnastic knowledge rather than concerning themselves with making sure the children are dressed to impress. However, leotards and tights are available in children’s sizes from every reputable gymnastics apparel retailer. For children’s gymnastic and dance recitals, costume-like apparel is available in a variety of materials and colors, from simple black leotards, to gold-sequined outfits.
