Famous Female Gymnast

There are some famous female gymnasts that live right here in the United States. Carly Patterson is the first US gymnast to win the Olympic all-around since Mary Lou Retton. Patterson also won a team gold medal at the 2003 World Championships. Speaking of Mary Lou Retton, she was the first US women’s gymnastics gold medalist. Shannon Miller is the most decorated gymnasts, between men or women, in US history. Her medals include two gold from the 1996 Olympics, two gold from the 1994 World Championships, and three gold from the 1993 World Championships. Other famous female gymnasts include Romanian Nadia Comaneci and Russian Svetlana Khorkina. A follower of Olympics will recognize more names and also know their favorite female gymnasts’ favored events.

A quick search of the Web will provide a fan access to the biographies of many famous and even lesser known female gymnasts. Wikipedia provides a broad resource on gymnastics and a list of gymnasts and the type of events where they have performed. The home of USA Gymnastics on the Web provides bios on many of their team members. This is a good starting resource to get some basic information. There is also a book called Superstars of Women's Gymnastics by Joel H. Cohen that will more than likely be available in a local library. It profiles many of the prominent figures in women’s gymnastics including Shannon Miller, Dominique Dawes, Nadia Comaneci, Olga Korbut, and Svetlana Boginskaya. Both Carly Patterson and Shannon Miller even have their own Web sites that give access to extra information. Patterson’s site even has a blog and forum where fans can interact with her. Reading biographies can be both informational as well as inspirational. Some athletes have gone through difficult times to reach the top and will provide a source of motivation for their fans. It is also important for an aspiring gymnast to know from where they come and where the sport is headed.

More specific resources would be the homepage of the official team of a specific gymnast. Canada, England and the US each have a Web page for their gymnastics teams. The official site of the Olympics also gives a list of many former athletes who have competed back into the mid-1900s. Using these various resources the avid fan or gymnast will be able to develop knowledge of their sport and its history.
